Reflection

DIVERGENT BLOG POST 4/21-4/27
(Blog I am reflecting on)

Words that describe my feelings express the voce in my posts. For example instead of using just the words “recommend” or “encourage” I include a descriptive word before it. A word that I used was “highly’’. The “highly encourage” or “highly recommend” reveals my passion for what I am including in my blog. My personality cannot be more vibrant and obvious through my diction and word choice.

I used diction in my blog post when I made the executive decision to include elevated language within my post. “Veronica does an amazing job of using elements that we have been learning in class; such as commas, dashes, single quotation marks, rhetoric. syntax, diction, figurative language, and allusions”. I used descriptions such as “amazing” to enhance my blog and writers voice. Also I used the word “elements” instead of simply saying “topics” or “subjects”. I chose to shorten my sentence length in order to include the element of syntax. Again, my voice is expressed through my syntax.
“A simile. ‘Each minute wears into me like a scrape of sandpaper" (Roth 229).
A metaphor. ‘Surrounding his head is a halo of blood’ (Roth 202).
Personification. ‘ My fingernails bite my palms’ (Roth 161).
And a hyperbole. ‘... my heart will burst out of my chest any minute now’ (Roth 38).”

Divergent Blog Post 4/21/4/27

I highly recommend the book Divergent  by Julia Roth to everybody reading this blog. Veronica does an amazing job of using elements that we have been learning in class; such as commas, dashes, single quotation marks, rhetoric. syntax, diction, figurative language, and allusions. Four specific examples of figurative language stand out to me the most.

A simile. "Each minute wears into me like a scrape of sandpaper" (Roth 229).

A metaphor. "Surrounding his head is a halo of blood" (Roth 202).

Personification. " My fingernails bite my palms" (Roth 161).

And a hyperbole. "... my heart will burst out of my chest any minute now" (Roth 38).

These example are a few of many literary written into the book. I highly encourage you to read this book and after you've seen these examples... I don't see how you could say no.

Divergent Blog Post 4/14-4/20

The book Divergent was pretty dead accurate for the first 200 pages or so of the novel. After that it starts getting off track. Based on the first 316 pages I have read I like the movie better. Maybe that is because i saw it first? I don't know.

I found a quote that is pretty much the entire book in a nutshell.
"Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up" (Four).

This is the point in the book where Four realizes that Tris is divergent. A HUGE turning point in the book. Because Tris is divergent, she has the ability to overcome her fears easier than others. She will have to work on overcoming her fear the way a Dauntless would. If she overcomes them to fast then Tris will be killed. Too slow and she will become factionless.

Krista Ramsey Blog Post

The blog I read by Krista Ramsey was titled "Grandmother says slain girl just an ordinary teen". The column talks about an ordinary 14 year old that was slain by another teenager. The grandmother of the deceased girl explains throughout the column of the various rules and precautions that had to be taken with the Adkins family in order to prevent something like this from happening. Tyann--who lived in Avondale-- was waiting for a ride home from a manicure when she was killed. She while know be displayed at her funeral with her nails done.

The best line within this column is "A niece was going to do Tyann's hair, she said. She'd be buried with a pearl necklace. And someone would do her nails". Earlier in the column Ramsey explained that Tyann never wore fake pearl necklaces. So how appropriate the display of her body is. This quote really hits home for readers who have either lost a friend or family member. The sentences in this quote are fragments which is an example of syntax.

Ramsey has a very unique writing style. The fact that she writes about the small things and people who have no voice is incredible. The difference it makes to hear about such stories and the support that they are getting is substantial.

Questions for Krista Ramsey:

What makes you focus on the small stories?

What does a typical day at work look like?

How do you acquire your inspiration?

Divergent Blog Post 4/7-4/13

“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.” -- Veronica Roth.

This quote is from the Dauntless Faction Manifesto. This line is inportant because it describes what the faction of Dauntless should act like. Members of the faction seem to have forgotten this belief. Nobody stands up for one another. For example the best initiate got stabbed in the eye and even though other intitiates knew who comitted the selfish act, nobody stood up out of fear.

The plot continues to develop from this quote. People start to commit ordianry acts of bravery and I know from watching the movie that later on Dauntless members like Tris and Four defy Dauntless Leadership and try to save the Abnegation Faction.
